Description  more details

Offered here is a  superlative set of antique early 20th century ivory billiard balls by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. with the original red oak box . This is among the best ivory sets that I've ever put up for auction.  This is a superb item for the avid billiard/pool collector with an eye for adding a centerpiece to their collection.

  • Excellent near mint condition, set of 3 billiard balls (1 red, 1 plain white, 1 dotted).  Red ball retains its much of its original color, but because of a slight re-truing/returning now has the characteristic alien-eye pattern. The plain white ball has minimal natural age crazing with the very small nerve/pulp canal visible on the turning axis, slight age discoloration. The dotted ball retain its original inset dots, at the turning axis at one pole and for some reason a little offset on the other, and has virtually no crazing around the equator. Very smooth finished surface on all balls* with no cracks, nicks or chips. The natural grain moire patterns are clearly visible on the white balls and discernible on the red ball.
  • Originally over-sized** with diameters exceeding 2-7/16", these balls have been at one time re-trued/re-sized to a uniform roundness at slightly smaller diameters, but still in excess of 2-3/8 stated of the box and of great uniformity.
    • 2.45" (6.22cm) for dotted white
    • 2.43" (6.17cm) or plain white
    • 2.43" (6.17cm) for the red
  • They have been played with little since, if at all.
  • In near mint condition; the red oak box with doved tailed joinings retains it original French polished shellac finish.  Corner joints and box lip are in perfect condition with no cracks or breaks. Infact the bevel joinings at the edges and corners are smart and clean.
  • Oak lid is incised/burned with a first usage/quality assurance notice and is easily legible throughout.
  • The dramatic wood grains continue perfectly through the top and bottom sides and ends (a rarity.)
  • Bottom of the box states - "2-3/8", but has penciling for "Cowhey       5  5th St", (googling turned up nothing).  Also, an object number "#5044" and some other indecipherable scribbles.
  • The inside original paper care/usage notice label is intact and shows no acid foxing. but has a slight smudge.
  • Original cotton batting/packing is in excellent shape.
